Students Not Always Covered in Home Insurance Policy, Says Only Insurance

London, GB (PRWEB) September 12, 2008 -- New research has discovered that some home insurance (http://www.onlyinsurance.com/Home-Insurance/) policies don't cover students when they move away from home.

According to Sainsbury's Home Insurance over 25 percent of policies do not cover the household's student and their possessions when they move away from home. According to UCAS nearly 350,000 students will be moving away to universities this month, this means that many may be caught out if the worse was to happen.

Students are being warned that they are big targets for thieves as their houses are often left empty for large periods of the day, meaning that home insurance cover is essential. People are also being advised to check their own home insurance policies before shelling out extra for a separate policy as some policies cover students living away from home.

With the average student's possessions estimated worth being in the thousands, it means that if you are caught out without home insurance it could be extremely costly.

Students shy away from home insurance

A survey conducted by Newcastle Building society exposed that one in five people who go to university do not have home contents insurance or renters insurance. The low number for cover is surprising, especially as 14% of young people polled by the lender have made a claim on an insurance policy in the past.

Wendy Lee, commercial director at the firm stated: "At this time of year, students returning to university need to think about home contents insurance in order to protect their belongings.

Lee furthered this statement: " It is worrying to see the number of 18-24 year olds who admit to forgetful acts over a year. It stands to reason that leaving your home without locking the doors or setting the alarm creates a risk for burglary but it can also affect your home contents cover should you come to claim."

They study also discovered that 18% of students had left their doors unlocked when leaving their property.
